Eric’s been building and marketing websites for nearly 15 years and will humorously consider himself “vintage” in another five. And he’s into that whole CrossFit thing.

My role at ProtoFuse

about-team-eric-sharp-vert-posterAs the Founder and acting CEO of a small business, I’m pretty immersed in every aspect of ProtoFuse.

To ensure I stay focused on what’s important, I ask myself three questions regularly. Are clients’ websites running on all cylinders? Is my team challenged and fulfilled? Are we profitable? If I can answer ‘yes’ to all three — all is good in my world.

When not working on the business, I’m working in it by embracing my role as our UX Designer. I’m guiding our clients’ websites from start (planning and strategy) to finish (launch & monthly performance reviews) to ensure we deliver what we promise.

My education & experience

I graduated with a Digital Media degree from Full Sail University in 1999 amidst the dot-com boom. I’m also a graduate of the EntreLeadership Master Series — a conference that still inspires me to this day.

Before founding ProtoFuse, I was the Creative Lead at WildCard Systems for five years designing websites and interactive training applications for Bank of America, US Bank, AAA & ADP. I was part of a very talented team that enabled WildCard to be acquired for $228M in 2005. I freelanced during those years as well, building websites for pretty much anybody that had $300.

Our impact on a SMB’s bottom line tops my list.

When our clients see significant ROI, sometimes even within the first 12 months, I smile. It’s fun to watch their mindset shift from “our website isn’t that important to us” to “our website is critical to Marketing and Sales“. Since constant measurement is ingrained from the moment we launch a website, I can tangibly see the impact we’re making.

What I consider my strength

My insatiable appetite for knowledge fuels my obsession in doing things better next time. Vince Lombardi said it best…

“We will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence.”

When you mix that obsession with my “D” personality (DiSC) and blue-collar roots, you get, well, me. :)

A client’s website I’m most proud of

I’m proud of every website ProtoFuse has built, but if I had to choose one, Cactus Technologies stands out. They had a 100% return on investment within 4 months of launch with the new business it helped generate. It epitomizes what a conversion-focused website should be all about.

The strangest thing I’ve experienced professionally

Many years ago, I had a new client drop off a deposit for a new website we were building for them. Then they completely disappeared and I never heard from them again. (The check cleared by the way.)

My favorite things outside the office

I always look forward to a good meal with my beautiful wife and new baby girl — and then sweating it off the next day with some CrossFit! I firmly believe an active lifestyle helps me in every other area of life.

My energetic dog, Klondike, also gets a lot of my attention. He’s such a character. I’m also one of the biggest Chicago Bears fans you’ll meet (when they’re not tearing my heart out). Outside of that, being editor/writer at TheSMBNerd.com and reading a non-fiction book every month keeps my time filled. Fellowship and a shared faith with my Summit family also keeps life in perspective.
